Its been a while that I posted on the web. Very busy with trying to start with the building of a new facility. Not easy for sure with all the regulations over here in the Netherlands. But there is success on the horizon.
So where were we. The out.
I think we all understand now that trading something of equal value is the way forward. Although I still come across a lot of trainers who have the idea that the dog just has to let go of what he has even if he just worked his ……….. of for it. Maybe with a medium drive dog you can pure because you ask him so friendly. But a high drive dog just got to the point of frustration because the task was so hard to accomplish and now he has to let go. I already know the answer,..NO
So we go for 2 options:
Option 1 old style YOU HAVE TO OUT BECAUSE I SAY SO and I think we all knows how that looks like.
Option 2 if you out you get something of equal value in return.
Option 1 is where either the dog gets aggressive or looses drive for that job he just did.
Option 2 is where the drive even goes up.
There is also an option 1,5 and that is for dogs already so stuck in not outing that some controlled “help” is needed so the dog can process his situation and that he or she make it better by just letting go and the miracle happens ,he or she gets back what he just didn’t want to give up.
This all works super for the reward he or she is working for, like a ball, Kong or tug toy.
But I hear you think “right all good until the decoy is there“ which is true for many dogs who see the decoy as the ultimate prey item. This all because we made the dog so super crazy about the suite and or sleeve. No ball is going to be of equal value ,for sure. And the 2 decoy’s system works , but as I said it can UP the drive and as soon the dog knows his second walking bite pillow is not in reach he goes back to holding on.
The answer to this is don’t make the decoy the ultimate prey item. This might be not the answer you want to hear because this also means a totally different approach to decoy work all together. But be honest to yourself ,we all know we all call it protection or even aggression work but For a lot of dogs its just a game with a giant bite-‐pillow. To be recognized by the dog is getting all hyped up just because he sees the walking bite-‐ pillow on the field. Everyone without protection equipment is perfectly safe on that field. There are even video’s of decoys with a bite jacket on and for the rest are wearing shorts and slippers. This can only be done if you are absolutely sure the dog goes for the equipment and not the guy.
It’s a different way of looking at the whole protection dog market were we are overwhelmed by dogs biting like crocodiles and holding on ,no matter what the decoy is doing.
A good part of my business is training the dogs away of this equipment. We even start the whole bite building of young dogs totally different just to make sure they do not get equipment happy. And you know what happens ……………….????? The dog has no problem with the out anymore, why? Because the dog can go from a stress (real aggression always gives stress)situation to a happy prey situation.
So how do we do that. Its hard to explain in pure text, its hard enough already during the classes we give about this concept. ( any interest in a class just drop me a mail ). Its changing the way we look at the protection build up. But its very effective, you don’t need all that fancy training stuff (e-‐collars ,pinch collars etc.) anymore. The last time I used a e-‐collar or pinch on one of my dogs for this is already years ago. They all wear a flat collar only and out for a ball. Hold on until the out is given, and have the street bites to prove the effectiveness if you would question. Certification is becoming something not to fear anymore because control of the dog is changing in a joy for you and the dog. This is bonding…………..
